A strange and sculptural winter-grower from the arid mountains of South Africa and Namibia. This dwarf succulent shrub grows slowly, forming a swollen, irregular base (caudex) with pale, upright or spreading branches that can look leafless much of the year. In fact, the stems themselves photosynthesize, and the plant may skip producing full leaves altogether. When it does, the leaves are short-lived, narrow, and clustered at the tips.

Plants can reach about 12 inches tall and 10 inches wide over time. The branches have a grey-green or whitish surface, with older growth peeling into papery brown flakes. Flowers appear from late winter into spring, tubular and pink to reddish-purple, perched at the ends of short stalks.

This species thrives in gritty, well-drained soil and bright light. It’s active in the cooler months and wants only minimal water in summer dormancy. Grows best with airflow and protection from summer rain or excess humidity. Keep it on the dry side, especially when temperatures drop. Over time, it stays compact, but can be pruned in active growth to shape the crown or encourage caudex development.

Native to rocky slopes along the coastal fog belt, Tylecodon buchholzianus is a fascinating, slow-forming plant that looks like a miniature alien tree and rewards patience with serious character.
