Mammillaria elongata cristata - 'Brain Cactus'
This is the crested form of Mammillaria elongata, commonly called “Brain Cactus” for its tightly folded, contorted growth that resembles a brain. Instead of forming the typical cylindrical stems of the species, the cristate form grows in undulating, fan-shaped ridges. The surface is densely covered in short, golden or copper-colored spines that give it a soft, textured look.
Native to central Mexico, the standard species grows on rocky slopes and cliffs. Like its normal form, this version stays compact and thrives in containers. It prefers bright light and fast-draining soil. Water deeply when dry, and reduce watering in winter. Protect from frost, best kept above 25°F.
A popular collector plant for its unusual growth pattern and sculptural appearance. Easy to grow and a great option for small spaces.
