Maihueniopsis bonnieae
A rarely seen species from the high mountains of Catamarca, Argentina, Maihueniopsis bonnieae forms dense, low cushions of rounded, green to reddish-green segments. Segments stay small, about 2 cm wide, and are tipped with fine, short spines. Growth is slow but steady, eventually forming tight clusters with a striking geometric texture.
In spring, plants produce lemon-yellow flowers near the top of the clumps. Native to rocky slopes at over 2,000 meters, this species is built for extremes, adapted to high light, cold nights, and long dry spells.
Grow in full sun with sharp drainage and deep, infrequent watering. Hardy to at least 20°F if kept dry. A highly desirable species for cold-hardy cactus collections or anyone looking for something uncommon and compact.
