Hurnia hystrix
Huernia hystrix is a low, spreading succulent with pale green to grayish stems lined in soft tubercles that give it a lightly spiny, textured appearance—earning it the nickname “Porcupine Huernia.” The stems can blush purplish in bright light and grow in a flat or slightly raised habit, forming a creeping mat over time.
The flowers are thick, five-lobed, and cream-colored with red mottling and a sunken center. They appear hanging from the stems in late summer to fall and, like most stapeliads, may have a faint carrion scent to attract flies for pollination.
This species does best in bright filtered light with excellent drainage and careful watering during active growth. Keep dry and cool in winter.
