Euphorbia flanaganii
Often called “Medusa’s Head,” Euphorbia flanaganii is a low-growing South African species that forms a central caudex with numerous slender, serpent-like arms radiating outward. The stems are green, cylindrical, and slightly curved, creating a flat, circular shape that slowly expands over time. Mature plants develop a woody base and can reach about 2 inches tall and 12 inches across.
In bright light, the color deepens and plants may produce small yellow cyathia (Euphorbia flowers) at the center. As with most Euphorbias, the plant contains a white sap and should be handled with care.
Best in bright sun to partial shade, in fast-draining soil with deep, infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Protect from frost, best kept above 30°F.
A striking, sculptural plant that stays compact and thrives in containers. Easy to grow and a great choice for caudiciform collectors or anyone drawn to weird geometry.
