Eulychnia castanea cv. varispiralis - branched
Eulychnia castanea naturally grows along the coast of Chile, but this varispiralis version only exists in cultivation. This cactus is easy to care for, but cannot handle a frost. There is a lot of variation that can occur in the same plant, even along the same column. The most common form is monstrose - a lumpy bumpy texture. Less common is the spiral form, with beautiful smooth spirals forming. I'm counting a plant as spiral if 50% or more of it is that way. I cannot guarantee how it will continue to grow!
This cactus tends to have a lot of corking - this is where the skin of the cactus turns brown. This is a normal sign of aging for a cactus and gives it lots of character.
